From an early age Ruth Thompson was strongly encouraged to explore the natural world completing the Duke of Edinburgh’s awards scheme and could always be found outside with books on science and natural history.
After studying Botany at degree level. Ruth volunteered at a city farm and worked at a couple of plant nurseries, before exploring woodland crafts and setting up Sylvan Skills.
Ruth trained with the coppice association in the 1990s and began by making simple hazel hurdles for small organisations and private gardens.
Since then, Sylvan Skills has grown to include working with Ruth's own locally grown willow. She creatively leads all projects in the business and manages staffing and collaboration in accordance with project requirements.
